Thank you very much for sharing your experiment in this pelagiosplay serie. Very useful for me since I'm also a "triplestore and Sparql noob". Your explanations are clear and I managed to do almost everything. However I encountered some difficulties :

- unless I went wrong, you do not mention in your blog posts the loading of pleiades places in 4store (turtle file). So I downloaded and imported them from "atlantides.org/downloads/pleiades/rdf/"

- the final Sparql query given in your Pleiadic Entry-Point do not run for me "as is" : it outputs an xml file with no results. I think the statement "?pleiadesgeoid foaf:primaryTopicOf ?pleiadespageid" is my problem because when I remove it, the query retrieves something. Actually the behavior of the query is quite odd : same problem as "foaf:primaryTopicOf" with "skos:altLabel" predicate (the query runs but no results), but it works fine with "rdfs:seeAlso". Same problem with "?pleiadesgeoid rdfs:comment ?comment"...
Do you have an idea of the reason why the query retrieves something with some predicates and nothing with others ?

Finally could you give some details about how you managed to implement "sparq2html.xsl" to the xml results file ?

That's excellent! BTW regarding labels: in fact most of the partners already do include some sort of labeling - although not according to one common convention.

E.g. nomisma has dcterms:title (see http://is.gd/hDbqqz); GAP currently assigns labels to books rather than individual annotations (see http://is.gd/l3TwSL) and so on. But labeling is one thing we're currently addressing in Pelagios 2, as part of our work on a sitemap convention. (This should also solve the bazillion files issue, BTW.)

Hey Tom, FWIW, there was a slight issue with the nomisma-pelagios rdf whereby Aegina was left out of the fun. The nomisma id for the mint as well as 78 hoards with coins from the island are now included in http://nomisma.org/nomisma.org.pelagios.rdf .

Just one question, what about modern recreations of artifacts that are presumed to have once been at the ancient site? Though currently at the ancient site they are not actually ancient along with the site, as they are modern replicas. Not sure what the best way to approach these types of images is?

A couple of people have written privately to ask (reasonably) "what's a hack day?" The term comes out of software development (particularly open source). You can read a bit about that here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hack_Day

In this particular case, what I mean is a time for anyone interested to get together and work on improving not so much the pleiades software as the content. So the idea is that I'll try to set aside everything else in my schedule -- and I'll encourage other Pleiades key team members to do the same -- and we'll be standing ready to help any and all Pleiades community members who want to make changes or additions to content. Community members needn't devote an entire day to the effort, but at least a couple of hours will be needed to make a significant contribution I suspect.

The main focus I'm proposing for this first 'Pleiades hack day' is to improve titles and descriptions for "prominent" or well-known places.

I'm certainly happy to get set up with an account, but I wonder about the long-term merits of adding sites piecemeal according to whether or not I (or anyone else) have a relevant photo. Coming down as it does

In terms of the (Greek) Bronze Age, Hope Simpson and Dickinson's Gazeteer of Aegean Civilisation in the Bronze Age springs to mind. The Gazetteer seems to have been used as a source by the ArchAtlas team:

but only the major sites (generally those already covered by the Barrington/Pleiades) are available at this point. Cracking into the Gazetteer raises the issue of significance; some entries record the findspots of sherd concentrations--and we come rapidly into survey territory: how does Pleiades define a "place"?

FWIW, I tried to create a quick-and-dirty slideshow of everything with Pleiades tags on our main AWIB page at http://isaw.nyu.edu/awib, but it turns out to require more intervention in the page templates than I'm spun up on, so I'm going to have to put it in our web developer's queue behind some [other work].

But meantime we can look at the Pleiades interactions, which is really the core issue at the moment. Though the long-term vision is to find ways to make AWIB, or something AWIB-like, a collaborative venture in which ISAW plays the role of cheerleader and problem solver and offers participants long-term image preservation services through the medium of the NYU Faculty Digital Archive (in case Flickr self-destructs, etc).

I think the "probably" and "said to be from" options are fine. I wonder thought whether we ought to introduce a new tag or two that would let us differentiate between pictures *of* a site and pictures of objects *from* a site. Maybe something like:

pleiades:place=12345 means "picture depicts the site (or some built component thereof)" ... or maybe (in light of the following) something like pleiades:depicts=12345

pleiades:findspot=12345 means "picture depicts object found on the site"

pleiades:origin=12345 means "object originating on the site"

These terms would mirror the vocabulary we've been toying around with for a long time regarding semantic web stuff:

It would be great to add the bronze age sites you're finding to Pleiades. Can I set you up with a username and password and we can then talk about the quickest/easiest way for you to make those suggestions? Pleiades is expanding beyond the boundaries of the Barrington, both in temporal and spatial terms. We've already pushed much further back for a few sites in Egypt, and forward in time for Byzantium, and there's a group of folks in California who've just got an NEH startup grant to start adding Ancient Near East places to Pleiades. One question that occurs to me is what the minimum standard for artifact provenance is or ought to be; is it worth machine-tagging objects "probably" or "said to be from"...? Also, in a few cases, I've added two machine tags, one for the archaeological provenance and one for the object's place of production--any thoughts on that? I'll keep a running tally of missing places; I've noticed a few so far, mostly Bronze Age sites--not surprising, given the Barrington's focus. I
haven't seen an explicitly-stated chronological range for Pleiades; are you still working within the 1000 BCE-650 CE limits?

First of all, I apologise: I missed this post that arrived inside my own blog only a week ago...

Second, I really do appreciate this fundamental methodological aspect: "more online, open examples of real inscriptions marked up in EpiDoc. Secondly, I want to see how far we can push an openly collaborative model in the practice of digital epigraphy, welcoming all interested parties in editing the text and pushing the boundaries on what we can and can't do with standard encoding and web publication." I hope that always more epigrapher will participate to these "dispositifs de sciences participatives" as I read it in French recently.

Third, about the figure at the bottom right, I cannot say what it is and I hope that some epigrapher will soon give any opinion (Eleonora Santin had a lot of supposition when I asked her, I hope she will share them here).

Fourth, about the encoding: I would follow Gaby's point of view, even if I consider the chiro as a kind of alphabetic symbol. I would recommend to encode the chiro in both ways, when it is possible and adequate, explicitly with some xml code such those related to abbreviations for instance *AND* / *OR* with its unicode codepoint. The editor has to make up his own mind, interpretes and take a decision.

About the figure, I would not encode it with a or a , as this is not related to character or glyph. It reminds me in some ways the discussion about "langue" and "langage" initiated by De Saussure. However, it has to be encoded as part of the object that bears an epigraph, and works well as it does for some other figures, like axe (see an example for the figure that comes often with « sub ascia » expression here : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/aa/Clippe_40e_Gaules_-_Grenoble.JPG).

Any suggestion to formalized the description of a figure?
